Hot Hair Cut and Styling Trends

Looking for inspiration to update your look? Two time Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year Brad Ngata reveals the hottest hair cut trends that are sure to get you noticed!

Cuts

1. The hottest cut of 2012 was definitely Anne Hathaway’s gamine pixie crop – emulating both Rhianna’s short crop on the cover of American Vogue (April 2011) and echoing Audrey Hepburn’s famous ‘do’. It was done right and transformed Anne from girl next door to superstar. Expect to see this making waves in the coming season.

2. Perhaps an interesting style to replicate will be the ‘Lady Di’ cut, updated in 2013 with short layers and faded-in regrowth. It should be worn slightly undone, with a natural texture and lots of volume.

3. ‘Kate the Great’ (Middleton) is definitely going to be one to copy in 2013. Since her new cut literally made headlines around the world, I’ve already had clients coming in for an update to this style. It should be done with beautiful, thick long layers, a nod to the 70s through the fringe and middle part. Keep your hair extremely conditioned to make this work to its full potential.

4. Kate’s new ‘do’ will lead us into other versions of the shag, with long layers finished with a soft blowdry and a dry, sea salt texture.

5. Just six months after his passing, Vidal Sasson-style classic precision cuts are going to see a resurgence in 2013. They never date and always look chic.

Styling

Films will provide some of the best inspirations for the coming season's looks. I think ‘Hitchcock’ will show a new generation of young girls the amazing styling of the 60s, but expect it (like the film) to be re-invented in a new way.

Similarly, ‘The Great Gatsby’ will also influence a new generation to the world of the finger-waved bobs and the essence of the roaring 20s. I would expect these to be more style influencers than complete style replications – i.e. consumers will be taking certain elements and incorporating these into their looks, rather than copying the whole style. Award season is just around the corner – so that will be the gauge for the coming season.
