All too many interns, all over the country, will spend the summer stapling stacks of papers and fetching coffee for little or no pay. But a lucky handful will be engaged in much more valuable, challenging and educational work.
Glassdoor, a social jobs and career community, just uncovered the Top 25 Highest Rated Companies Hiring Interns Right Now, which is based entirely on feedback from interns who are currently or have previously worked at more than 4,700 different businesses. They rated their level of satisfaction with their employers and their internships on a 5-point scale.
Not surprisingly, Facebook ranks No. 1 with a rating of 4.6, knocking Google out of the top spot it held for the past two years.
A Facebook software engineer intern in the Menlo Park, Calif. headquarters said: “The culture is pretty awesome and has staying power. The intern program is amazing and everyone is actually happy that the interns are there.”
Landing one of those coveted positions can be tough, though. When asked how difficult the interview process is, former and current interns gave the social media giant a score of 3.1 out of 5–probably due to the tricky questions.
“When you read what interns had to say about working at Facebook, it wasn’t too surprising to see why the social network’s intern program is so highly rated and appreciated among young professionals,” says Scott Dobroski, a Glassdoor community expert. “At Facebook, interns mentioned working on innovative technology as a common theme to a great experience, in addition to feeling valued by full-time employees, given real responsibility and independence, while still receiving mentorship and guidance.”
Facebook held the No. 5 spot on Glassdoor’s recent Best Places To Work list.
Google, the No. 2 company, earned an overall score of 4.6 and an interview difficulty rating of 3.4.
“Google interns speak favorably of a laid-back atmosphere where they’re able to collaborate with employees at all levels, opportunities to work on projects that will impact people worldwide, a generous compensation package, and perks like free food and ping pong breaks,” Dobroski says.
A software engineer intern in Mountain View, Calif. said one of the best things about a Google internship is “having the opportunity to take a look at all the wonderful stuff [Google has] developed and taking part in the creation of new tools and products is an amazing experience, especially if you’re still in college.”
No. 3 Qualcomm follows with a 4.5 rating. Interns at the San Diego–based company—which designs, manufactures and markets digital wireless telecommunications products and services—gave it an interview difficulty rating of 3.0.
An interim engineering intern in said of the company: “Interns are automatically being considered for return internship opportunities or a full time position. There are many career opportunities in the Qualcomm HQ, employees are encouraged to explore areas that fit their passion.”
Qualcomm interns also enjoy the “great mentoring program that encourages intern innovation; a competitive salary; and a flexible schedule that meets the needs of students with a demanding schedule,” Dobroski says. “They also speak favorably about the beautiful campus and location at the company’s San Diego headquarters.”
Some common benefits among the 25 highest rated companies for interns include excellent career development and advancement opportunities, mentorship programs with helpful teammates and access to senior leaders, great compensation, and “a culture that makes interns feel valued and like a part of the company just like any other employee,” he says.
“From what we see at Glassdoor, right now is the time for anyone interested in a summer internship to apply. Waiting until May is often too late,” Dobroski adds. “Across the U.S, nearly 5,000 employers are currently hiring for interns, and we’ve identified that most of these internships are found in metropolitan areas such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, where hundreds of employers are looking for interns right now in each city.”
